Cavaco

Cavaco won, que porcaria!

One cool thing was that Alegre got more votes than Soares. I guess that this has put Socrates in a bit of pickle ...

Imagine having a poet as president?!

I was rooting for Francisco Louçã... at least he´s young, a very intelligent guy, a good economist and he has energy and goo will... Soares and Alegre only had spite for each other and that´s why Cavaco won so easily... the main oposition was divided... too bad Louçã was part of a party that the portuguese fear... they have their reasons, but the man really is a good man.

if either flank has many parties or candidates they are more likely to fail. but then ps is in government although by a close shave. i heard that socrates changed from alegre to soares ...

as far as i understood it: none of the candidates actually talked about the presidency. all the left wing candidates said bad things about cavaco, but as you say: as way of demeaning the other left wing candidates.

how come portuguese fear BE?

but then i am surprised to see parties in portugal using the hammer and sickle as their symbol!

saturday i heard one woman saying that Cavaco seemed like a dictator, and that was the reason for her to vote on her! some people obviously have a very thwarted sense of reality...

how many points did cavaco gain by stating on jan 18 that he will not be a spokesperson for the government as apparently soares was implied to be. actually soares might have said something that made it look like we would become a spokesperson for the government if he was elected president, my portuguese is still very bad, but that is how i understood an article from jan 19 in publico.

I was I bit out of the scene after christmas and largely upset for it was clear the cavaco was going to win. That woman was refering to the "good old days" of our dictator Salazar where there was "peace and order" and "youth was under control" - typical of the narrow minded country side low education people to desire someone with that mindset. Alegre was planning to run for presidency for ages, years even, but kept it secret, quiet, and many people in the party did not like his way of working - a mere poet all the time and then bang, announces himself as a candidate and expects the party to suppot him full time. I was a bit doggy his political ways and he would never be the type of man a portuguese would elect for president. Now the prime minister, very discontent, many people very discontent, etc put forward the candidacy of soares for president. I believe (although he is not my candidate) he would only be the one who could face Cavaco and win the election. But Alegre stole half his votes and many confused with the spite between Alegre and Soares, two candidates from the same party decided to vote for cavaco as well. This is my humble opinion. Now... Cavaco is a chauvinist nazi neoclassical economist that won´t give a penny to a dying man on the street, but portugal is going through very rough times, and we do need a president that supports the goverment and inforces the polices to make the economy work. If Socrates falls into the good-will of cavaco he can be a good president for the country. If not, he will dissolve the government first chance he has, or create a even more dangerous hole for us to sink. Soares is a diplomatic, extremely good public-relations, but do we really need that in times of trouble? In most scenarios (like 9/10) it would be preferable to having cavaco for lider but well lets wait and see... he may... just may help this government a bit! Who knows? Even the worse sinners repent sometimes. Nevertheless I believe Louçã would do the job a trillion times better, with heart and soul, not just euros in the eyes. But one won´t feed on utopia. But don´t take me seriously.... I have always made an effort to stay away from politicians and news related to them as much as possible... O don´t know about cavaco and soares stating they will or will not be "spokesmen" for the goverment in newspapers and incidents that may have had impact. I believe the character of the people and the circunstances of the economy and major impact - propaganda comes and goes and every day is a new gossig and I don´t care for it at all, neither I believe it makes a difference in the end in a big election, either being portugal, US presidency, etc, etc etc...

some typos I notice now... I getting ready to sleep and not in the most confortable position to type, sorry.

BTW, BE can be an ok party for the youngsters to believe in and vote for so that they have a couple of members of the parliament raising their voices against some issues that other parties try to let go... but for a presidential election??? No way... It could be Jesus Christ himself that he would never win if he was from one of the extreme partys - extreme right but musch worse if it was from extreme left. We´ve had Salazar (right) and survived... some old people still say "those were the days"... but comunists!!! The whole country is governed by a more lefty party but don´t you dare say anything that resembles comunism... what is mine is mine... what is yours... I´ll try to pinch it, but its yours anyways... see what I mean? So... use terms "tendency to left" "worries about social policies" but nothing about "central planning" "the reds" or "comunas"

Well, my amusement may not fit all 'omnipotent' tastes, sorry!!! What's your view on this??
Empunhando bandeiras nacionais, bandeiras negras e bandeiras

what can i say: the world is full of irony ... do the people in pnr realise that?

Johan: for a long time the extreme right flanks are tying to stir up the nation with demonstrations like that. Not long ago I was there in portugal and something of the king happend (april) I believe. It´s usually very young people that are ashamed of what they do later on in life. I remember that the No Name Boys the futebol "cheerleading group" for Benfica acting as and infiltration for the Nazi party in portugal when I was in highschool. I was truly shamefule the propaganda and other acts of racism they would perform. Today they are changed man and see those times as they way of rebelling themselves against the system - some try drugs, some dress in black, they found it funny to belong to a secret organization.

I myself truly pray that the phenomena does not spread and get out of hand. All the other portuguese look at those demonstration with horror in their faces and dismay saying "we´ve always been and accepting people... why now?" Well... because in tough times we can handle ourselves, but we´ve been in tought times for too long and groups from to blame evrything but the natural state of the economy. They don´t have jobs - blame the ucranians. Ok, it shows as too racist, lets go the other way aroung first, blame the blacks that are killing the portuguese. Truth is in South Africa the murder rate is almost as high as NY, and it is not just portuguese, it´s everybody, it´s other blacks too, rivalry between gangs, everything... the whole country is a social mess. They just took ONE fact that interest their needs to make a demonstration about it. It is not planned against the portuguese... it´s revenge against any former colony or party that one the other party does not aprove, then they retaliate... It is a South African issue, and the portuguese that go there know the political and social instability of the country and decide to take they chance for business. Now here... let´s not use facts out of context. Let´s deal with the rize of neo-nazism the way it is, and not disguise it buy claiming they were groups fighting for "justice in africa".

i know that south africa still has a long way to go to clear out the post-apartheid confusion/mess/anarchy/tension/you-name-it. that is why i think it is ironic that some portuguese neo-fascist even come up with the pecular notion that south africans are racist against portuguese ... do they even for a second think tjat anyone buy that?

Of course not johan, that is why everyboby is worried with the neo-nazism rising in the society. What feral was talking about was an allusion to that - The skin heads, the military type boots, the white sheet flags. Nobody is worried about the portuguese dying in south africa, (well, to a point), the question is just nazism IN PORTUGAL! And that is what feral was trying to alert us for, and what we need to keep fighting not to spread. I believe the number one measure is: improve our economy so all will have jobs, a decent living and no reason to dislike foreigners. Number two and musch more difficult is raise the level of education and mentality of our people to see as all as equals and the land not as a nation but as a place to live and share.

Improving the economy, jobs for all and decent living... How many times has that been promised?? I have lived in six countries in Europe and every government promises the same, but everything always stays the same. Think of European history... Was the German economy in shambles?? Immigration at a peak and unemployment at rediculous levels in the 20's??? And Europe now? Maybe not as bad as before but history has a anoying habit of repeating itself. that's what I'm worried about. The skinheads, boots and black are just an accessory to what the real question is all about. The governments don't really help avoid the rising right wing situation and believe me they are rising in numbers. A friend of mine mentioned the situation to me yesterday on how since the incident where hundreds of coloured youths attacked the beach last year, stealing and beating people up, the number of members that have joined the right wing party, he belongs, to have tripled. Within the short time period between then and now he estimates membership has increased an extra two thousand members! (just in Lisbon!!) Now think about everytime an illegal immigrant attacks someone, or a black man attacks a white woman or even an immigrant doing anything illegal??? What will happen then???
