20% less energy consumption by 2020

The EU commission has just launched an energy saving plan for the EU.
.
20% less consumption by 2020.
That is probably reasonably easy to achieve.
Why arent they more bold? Say 40% by 2020?
Anyway, 20% certainly will create plenty of jobs the coming years,
at least in contruction when all flawed buildings will be improved.

With the upcoming rising on energy taxes, its allways a good idea to start lowering the energy consumption ;)

Johan... I don't get it... really... Why do environmentalists think about reducing consumption instead of changing the ways energy is produced?

Is there any harm to the world if I drive everywhere in a solar car, or keep my house heated or cooled always powered by wave energy?

I mean, I understand the concept that too much consumption is always hindering but hey... is racioning the solution?

I don't get some "green" ideas.

no energy is for free, even solar energy comes at a cost. it has to be distributed which always comes with losses. it is inevitable. basic thermodynamics.

in the same framework it costs less to use less than to use more energy more efficiently. Although being more energy efficient is a good way to decrease energy consumption. ie an air conditioner using a heat pump (bomba de calor) is three (3!) times more energy efficient than a normal air conditioner. The same goes for an electric car compared to petrol driven car.

there also is a limit to how much bioenergy energy can be used for heating and electricity unless we are more interested in having a hot bath or going for a drive rather than having food on the table ;-)

as for wave, solar, water and wind energy: i dunno how much infrastructure is needed to cover each nations energy consumption. i think most think that it is not enough to cover our current "needs".

FOE likes to say that if one cover 1% the planets area with solar panel there is enough energy for everyone. but then 1% is 3% of land area. i think all houses and other buildings together cover a much smaller area than that. anyone knows for certain?
