Ban the bulb, in Ireland

taken from recent email from greenpeace:

" Ireland's Environment Minister announced a law yesterday to ban energy-wasting lightbulbs by January 2009. We did it!

The Irish Government's 2009 ban is the most progressive in Europe by far. They still need to really pass the law of course, and we still want at least one more country in the EU to follow suit -- setting the standards for EU legislation on energy efficiency."

No more incandescent light bulbs!

Step 4 in the Greenpeace 7 steps:

Challenge lightbulb makers

Petition text:

“Dear Philips, Osram, GE and SLI Sylvania,
You cannot deny the scale of the climate emergency, and the need for urgent action including energy conservation. Some of the lightbulbs you make are energy savers, and some of them squander energy unnecessarily. Stop manufacturing inefficient lightbulbs by January 2010 at the latest.

P.S. Philips: As a sponsor of Al Gore’s Live Earth concerts, you should be taking the lead on this!”

Here is the place to do it u 2!

Here is my comment:
"Even better, put more emphasis on developing and selling LED based lights. At the moment they are even more expensive then the CFLs. So with the supposed “efficiency of scale” I guess you could slash those prices a lot. This would lead to even more energy savings and no heavy metal waste compared to CFLs LFs.

Perhaps you should view yourselves as providers of lighting solutions rather than light bulb vendors?!"

Ecofamilies

Quercus has made a study called Ecofamilias on 30 families with altogether 82 members. They measured energy consumption for 8 months. From that data they recommended some alterations, mainly turn off things on stand by, switching to low energy bulbs and choosing a better payment scheme from the electricity distributor.

As have been stated over and over again the first two very small switches can decrease the consumed energy quite amazingly in comparison to how simple it is.

Quercus will increase the study to 225 all over 9 climatic zones on continental Portugal during 2007-2008.

Notably most of the families in the first phase around Lissabon almost all had single walled unisolated houses...
