New Greenpeace report shows how the cattle industry in Brazil is feeding demand for raw resources and “Slaughtering the Amazon”

The Greenpeace report “Slaughtering the Amazon” is the product of a three-year investigation into Brazil’s cattle industry, the country’s chief source of CO2 emissions and the largest single driver of deforestation anywhere in the world. Our investigation exposed the Brazilian government’s complicity in bankrolling deforestation in the Amazon, as well as several top name shoe brands – such as Adidas, Nike, Reebok, and Timberland – whose demand for leather may be supporting cattle ranchers that are illegally slaughtering the Amazon.

Swine flu breeding in pig factory farming?!

Did you know that evidence is growing of the link between factory farms and swine flu? International organisations have been warning that these inhumane and filthy operations are breeding grounds of disease for years.

I just signed a petition calling on the the United Nations World Health Organisation and the Food and Agriculture Organisation to investigate and develop regulations for factory farming to uphold global public health standards. If we reach 200,000 signers, the petition will be delivered in Geneva with a herd of cardboard pigs. Sign below and tell your friends -- a pig will be added for every 1000 signers!

Demand justice for the victims of Bhopal

I just took part in this cyber action

"Please take urgent action to call for justice for the survivors of the 1984 Bhopal disaster who have once again walked 800km to Delhi seeking an appointment with the Prime Minister to seek redress for their long standing demands.

Two years ago, the Prime Minister only agreed to meet with them after they spent 21 days on the streets, including 6 days of fasting, after having walked to Delhi. He promised to deliver on their demands. Two years later, these promises have proven hollow."

An improved CITES is needed

In early June, the 14th conference of the 'Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora' (CITES) will be held in the Netherlands.

The convention regulates international trade in endangered species and protects plants and animals from extinction. But Milieudefensie/Friends of the Earth Netherlands wants CITES to do more - their proposed changes to the convention would make an impact on the international trade in destructively and illegally logged wood.

Send an email to the Dutch minister who is hosting a special meeting that will set the agenda for CITES.
