Two GMO free products

Recently I have bought two products that both are stated to be GMO free.

The first is ice cream from the Greek company EVGA. I guess it is from conventional ingredients although none of them are GMO. So far so good! Quite literally!

The second is Kingfisher natural toothpaste, mint with lemon.
Do normal toothpaste any GMO?
As far as I know it is just a bunch of chemicals mostly derived from fossil fuels.

So lets have a look the list of ingredients:
- calcium carbonate : chalk
- vegetable glycerine : palm oil
- Aqua = water, why cant they just write water?
- silica : ore
- sodium lauryl sulfate : palm oil
- cellolusa gum : plant fibre
- sodium mono-fluoro phosphate
- mentha piperita : mint
- citrus limonum : lemon
- foeniculum vulgare : fennel

Two minerals: silica and fluor etc
Three herbs: mint, lemon and fennel.
Two products derived from palm oil
and one from plant fibre.
Plant fibre could be anything, and potentially GMO.
I dont think that the "herbs" nor palms tree are availble as GMO.
But there are plenty of unsustainable oil palm plantations!

It has been suggested that the EU eco-label for agricultural products should include the possibility to label ingregredients (not the whole product) as ecological.
As far as I know all the above plant based products are availble from ecological agriculture. So if Kingfisher really wanted they could probably step up the stringency a bit more.

I think both chalk and silica is there to polish the enamel.
Probably they could drastically decrease the relative amounts of these two quite a bit and still get a good toothpaste, with the added advantage of achieving a product that as whole can be eco-labelled. If all mineral content is less than 5% and all other are derived from organic production.

8 goda skäl till att köpa ekologiska produkter

KRAV anger 8 skäl för ekologiskt jordbruk:

1 - Skonar vattnet

some reading

I have not been outwardsly active lately. I have been reading some books from the Swedish Formas on GMO and ecological farming. It seems that GMO with herbicide resistance does not generally increase the field yield compared to conventional non-GMO farms. Only in situations with very high pressure of weeds and other pests does it have any impact relative to conventional non-GMO farming. 99% of all agricultural GMO are with pesticide resistance and/or contains transgenic toxins. Whereas overall crop failures are only to 10% due to weeds or pests. Around 80% of the losses are due to physicochemical stresses such as draught, too much water, too warm, too cold or too much salt in soil. But then you can not sell a canned remedy for bad weather. I guess it is up to academia rather than industry to come up with proper and sustainable solutions for improving farm yields by decreasing the crop's sensitivity to extreme conditions.

Almost within REACH II, EU energy and GMO soy

The REACH will have a second reading in Parliament December 12. Sofar the major hurdles is the opposition of Germany and a few others to a stricter implementation of the subsitution principle. And also some formal matters on the agency that will control that the REACH is running OK.

EU has been working a energy strategy plan. Currently renewables and nuclear energy is on the board. I still dont understand why so many people are so fond of nuclear energy...

The ISIS just had a press release quoting a study that showed the female rats fed with GMO soy beans had a higher incidence of stunted litter. Those that survived were sterile. Kind of puts you of eating GMO, does it not?

Organic clothing soon into mainstream

I was elated to read that Levi Strauss will launch jeans made with organic cotton later in this year (2006) within their Levi jeans brand. Sadly most of the models will only be available in the US in 2006, and some selected stores in Europe. Hopefully the complete e-Levi collection will be available in Europe already in 2007.

Organic cloting has sofar only been available via specialty stores and very often only online. As far as I know none of the major international nor national chains have any organic clothing in their collections. Hopefully, Levi Strauss´ step will encourage other retailers and producers to introduce organic clothing into their collections.

Read more on: CSR Wire press release 2006-07-05.

I do not need to tell you why organic cotton is so much better for the environment compared to conventional and GMO cotton? Do I?

GMO is really bad since it is in almost all cases used to increase the use of toxins in agriculture:, eg see:

Brist på försiktighet i miljödepartementet?

Läs denna artikel i SvD
http://www.svd.se/dynamiskt/inrikes/did_9977453.asp

I korthet:

There are no independent EFSA specialists?!

Recently the president of EFSA, Catherine Geslain-Lanéelle, said in relation to a question about the independece of her specialist: that if what necessary to remove all with ties to (the GMO) industry there would be no one left (Le Monde 2009-06-30 page 18), and that a good expert that has not worked in the industry would be suspicious. Which of course is peculiar since they are by EU law required to be independent of the interests they are evaluating ... So for now it seems one cannot truly expect EFSA to be really rigorous in its evaluation of new (and old) GMO products.

Are you eating illegal rice?

I guess you also have noted the breaking news on rice illegal for human consumption has been sold in various counties throughout the European Union.

Why is this happening?
Why are the makers of GMO rice not more careful?
It is certainly will only give them a bad name!
In this case it is Bayer that has developed the illegal rice.

GM Contamination Register

At last a register of GMO contamination events have been formed. Greeneace and GeneWatch UK has joined forces to make this register and update it. Of course only events that has been noted and the register has been informed of will be entered so one would expect that the register is a gross underestimation of all contamination events. Still, this should prove to be a powerful tool for the environmental movement.

From 1996 to 2006 142 events were publicly registered.

GM-crops are economic failures

I have just read the executive summary of the report Who benefits from gm crops? an analysis of the global performance of gm crops (1996-2006) released by the Friends of the Earth in January 2007.

Here is my summary and the main conclusions of the report:

The main market for GM crops is US in which maize, cotton, canola and soybean have been given traits to render them herbicide resistent (mainly Glyphosate), insect resistent (mainly Bt), both herbicide and insect resistent. This has lead to an increase in herbicide resistent weeds leading to farmers spraying more and more. Also the yields are lower than conventional non-gm crops. The farms have increased because it is so expensive to use both pesticides and GM-crops, but even then net income has decreased. Also, non-GM farmers complain over increasing difficulty in finding non-gm seeds.

GM-soy beans have increased in South America mainly for exportation of cattle feed. This has lead to increase in pesticides. Again lower yields due to increase in pest resistance and also GM soy is less tolerant to droughts.

Bt-cotton in China shows lower net income than non-gm cotton in China, India, Indonesia, Australia, South Africa, western Africa and Latin America. All over the same result. Lower yields and increase drought intolerance and increase in secondary pests.

In 2006 in India 7 regions jointly filed law suits towards Monsanto for excessive royalty fees. In December 2006 the case was still at India's Supreme Court.

In Indonesia Monsanto paid bribes to government official to get their Bt-cotton on the market. The Bt-cotton was later withdrawn from Indonesia because complaints over the inefficiency of the Bt-cotton and the excessive price of the Bt-cotton seeds.

In West Africa, and all over the world, poor farmers cannot sell to the US cotton market because they cannot compete with the heavily subsidised American cotton. At the same time US wants to force every one to use GM cotton seeds that are much more expensive than normal cotton.

All over the world Monsanto actively works against saving seeds to be used for future farming that has been practise in all countries for centuries.

Experiences after more than a decade of commercial planting of GM crops lead FOEI to draw the following conclusions:

The GM crops commercialized on a large scale in a few countries in the world since 1996 have not addressed the main agricultural problems and challenges facing farmers in most countries of the world, and have not proven to be superior to conventional crops.

GM crops have been released quickly and widely without an adequate evaluation and understanding of their performance or of their health, environmental and socio-economic impacts.

Small-scale farmers and consumers have not benefited from the introduction of GM crops.

GM crops commercialized today have on the whole increased rather than decreased pesticide use, and do not yield more than conventional varieties. The environment has not benefited, and GM crops will become increasingly unsustainable over the medium to long term.

To date, GM crops have done nothing to alleviate hunger or poverty. The great majority of GM crops cultivated today are used as high-priced animal feed to supply rich nations with meat. More than four out of every five hectares of GM crops are engineered to withstand the application of proprietary herbicides sold by the same company that markets the GM seed, and have little if any relevance to farmers in developing countries who often cannot afford to buy these chemicals.

Monsanto has been the main beneficiary of the commercialization of GM crops in the United States.

Large-scale farmers in the US and Argentina have benefited from a ‘convenience effect’, particularly in soybean production. However, it is questionable whether this ‘convenience effect’ means greater net economic returns compared to those derived from conventional soybean production.

There are a lack of comprehensive studies on the performance of GM crops in every country that has commercialized them, and this consequently calls into question their claimed benefits.

Better food additives?

There seems to be some joggling with the EU regulations for food additives going on. The EU parliament wants environmental concerns to be included in the evaluation of food additives. In the current form of the proposal, currently authorised food additives will remain so but any additives not on the list will be automatically banned. One concern seems that the authorisation will be done by an external committe and not via the usual co-decision procedure. Some of you might remember the overly relaxed attitude that the EFSA has with regards to GMO products ...

Suzuki on GMO

The quote of the day on TreeHugger:

"We have been told that genetically engineered (GE) material just disperses in nature, but in fact, it is remarkably permanent. Biologically engineered genes and DNA have been found to persist in soil organisms, in insects, pollen, and especially water, and have been found in agricultural ditches as much as a kilometer from the original site. The antibiotic-resistant marker genes used in the process have survived digestion by cattle and even bees, and therefore post a threat of increased antibiotic resistance up and down the food chain. This is one reason why the technology is under a de facto ban in Europe. The genes themselves are not confined to the original, patented plant, but can be spread by wind or pollen to other varieties of the same crop, and even to wild relatives.

Canada is already having tremendous problems with genetically engineered canola, which has not only spread its herbicide-resistant trait to other canola, but is now affecting its many wild relatives, creating what are being termed "super weeds." The situation is so serious that one reason the Canadian Wheat Board is actively fighting the introduction of herbicide-resistant GE wheat, apart from market considerations, is that the species has many wild relatives that could forever become contaminated with herbicide resistance."

David Suzuki and Holly Dressel, Good News for a Change: How Everyday People are Helping the Planet (2003, Greystone Books).

Do I even need to comment on this?

Romania says NO to GMO!

Yet another country makes a bold stand saying no to GMOs in their agriculture:

"Romania — In an historic move, the Romanian Government today (2007-03-27) announced it will ban genetically engineered (GE) maize and embrace organic agriculture. The move is particularly significant as GE maize is the only commercially cultivated GE crop permitted in Europe."

Lets save the world in a conventional cotton T-shirt

Just surfed into spreadshirt.com.

I like this design:

Spreadshirt Marketplace - People are Killing Me

BUT it is only available in conventional cotton.
For all know it might be GMO!!!

Although spreadshirt have organic T's in their selection, but apparently not for this one ...

Trans fats off the plates in NY

The mayor of New York has decided to forbid trans fats to be used in the food in all restaurant within the city limits for health reasons. Trans fats have more negative impact on the human health than other types of fats.

Some of the bigger chains such as McDonalds, Taco Bell and Kentucky Fried Chicken has said they will replace the trans fats with other fats. The hamburger chain Wendys has already replaced the trans fats with a mixture of soy and corn oils.

Some claim that trans fats make food taste better but that is just nonsense. The NY mayor says that he loves hamburgers so is the harm in making the little healther while keeping the good taste?

Seems like a good initiative. Denmark has already put a 2% limit of trans fats in all food stuff. Same taste just healthier. And that is why the researcher managed to convince the politicians to pass that law. Now EU says that it is trade obstacle but Denmark says they will go to court if necessary.

Did I write soy oil above? Yes I did. I guess much of comes from GMO soy ...

A danish scientist says it is better to use the trans fats for shoe polish!

WTO is not interested in your environment and your health!

In a recent WTO ruling it is claimed the European (or European contry) ban on many GM crops are barriers to free trade (= trade that does not have to abide to any laws!).

Do tell your ministers of trade that protection of health, the environment, consumer choice and the right of farmers to produce GM free food must come before the free trade rules of the WTO.

Do it here!

On the same note I think we should congratulate Greece on its decision to extend the GMO ban to GM maize from Monsanto. The email to the Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis is ndpress1 at nd.gr.

Some key facts about GMO

I just read some key facts about GM crops (pdf file) from the FOE Europe report "Who benefits from GM crops? Monsanto and the corporate-driven genetically modified crop revolution".

In short:
GM crops are almost only modified to have herbicide tolerance or insect resistance. The former has increase the use of pesticide. There are few crops such as maize, soy and cotton that has either of the two traits.

The overall performance seem to be worst then conventional and organic production. GM maize and soy are almost only used for animal feed and heavily processed food.

In no way has GM crops done anything to alleviate hunger or poverty in the developing countries. Except from bribes from Monsanto to selected officials in a number of countries ...

One would then ask: how come they (Monsant, Bayer and Syngenta) still pursue these types of GM crops? Normally when people draw up business plans much of the focus is on the selling point in terms on what the value for consumer/buyer is. In the case of GM crops sofar there is no benefit to neither farmer nor consumer.

Take action

I will start this with a splash of actions ...

I just sent an email to Kimberly-Clark about stop using wood from ancient forests
for making Kleenex. These guys are the happy recipients of my email:

Mr. Thomas Falk, CEO of Kimberly-Clark - thomas.j.falk@kcc.com
Mr. Ken Strassner, Vice-President Environment for Kimberly-Clark - ken.strassner@kcc.com
Mr. Dave Dickson, Director, Corporate Communications - ddickson@kcc.com

If you do not want to write from scratch here is a good starting point:
Kleencut.net

I also sent an email to the board of directors at Monsanto about some mystery dna in some of their GMO. ContactOurDirectors@monsanto.com
I tried the same for the CEO Hugh Grant (sic!) hugh.grant@monsanto.com
sofar neither have bounced. But then again neither have replied either.

Anyways:
http://act.greenpeace.org/ is always a good start for a happy day full of
emails to those that make a lot of money by eagerly destroying our environment.

Take care out there it is a world full of toxins and
sometimes some beautiful flowers ...
